The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) was awarded a contract worth more than 20 million euros from the Ministry of Transport of Malaysia to supply and install a high-speed baggage handling system. The new system will make baggage transfer times between the satellite terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Express Rail Link (ERL) platform in the main terminal up to five times faster. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2007.
Today’s passengers, especially frequent fliers and business travelers, want fast baggage claim and connecting times. The new baggage handling system (BHS) from Siemens will transport baggage between the two terminals at speeds of up to 36 km/hour, compared to the previous rate of 7.2 km/hour. This will enable much faster and more efficient handling of customer baggage for those passengers who, upon arrival, have a direct connection from the airport to Kuala Lumpur’s Sentral main railway station. Quick and convenient baggage handling at KLIA will enhance the facilities at the KL Sentral and allow it to serve as an “airport in the city.”
The new system uses a high-speed tray conveyor system in which bags are placed on individual trays for better control and tracking at high speed compared to conventional belt conveyors. The additional conveyor lines will also increase the capacity of the ERL baggage handling at KLIA.
KLIA, which is a fast-growing major airport in the region, will be the fourth airport hub in Asia to be equipped with a baggage handling system from Siemens, after Hong Kong, Incheon (Seoul) and Beijing International Airport. Similar systems have been installed by Siemens in Dubai, Frankfurt, Madrid and other major international airports. In Malaysia, Siemens was also the system and solutions provider of the Express Rail Link linking KLIA to the city center and for the MAS Cargo Handling System at KLIA.
